Happy the Dare week to all who celebrate! If you’re not even moderately excited to check his debut record, I hate to break it to you, but you’re on the wrong side of the Fun Police.
I found out last night that my wife has never once experienced déjà vu. It came up after I mentioned feeling it heavily lately – she simply has never felt it, and would really love to. I didn’t know that not everyone gets it? I don’t really have any insightful followup here, it was just a genuine surprise.
Anyways, here are some Good Links:
Recs-y To Someone – Clairo went on Perfectly Imperfect today to talk about her favorite things
“Chatterboxes” – it’s not new, but as a born and raised Bay Area music fan, I really loved this two hour podcast with Deerhoof talking about the making of their best album, The Runners Four. I practiced in the same building as them in Oakland, and I’m shocked they could make such a cool sounding record – with Line6 PODs for guitars, no less!
Didn’t Even Try To Get Tickets – but I did like this piece by Clare Thorp on 30 years of Definitely Maybe
As always, you can follow along on our playlists on Spotify and Apple Music, which update every Tuesday along with the newsletter. Enjoy!
Mount Eerie – I Walk
A new Mount Eerie record! With a band! More aching sadness! But with drums again!!
Slic feat. Silas – Red
Slic’s Unbearable Heat dropped Monday, and Slic’s talent marrying non-stop sing-song pop hooks with unexpected minimalism remains at peak power across the album’s 11 tracks. The record utilizes vaporwave’s digital grain on its instrumentals, but Slic’s vocals are clean, ethereal, and crisp, never shying away from the tension at the center of each song’s strange heartbeat.
A$AP Rocky – Taylor Swif
“Taylor Swif” is a totally fine track with a mildly regrettable chorus, but the video is a surreal stunner a la Michel Gondry or CANADA that feels deserving of constant MTV rotation. Dozens, if not hundreds, of pause-worth moments abound.
Black Moth Super Rainbow – All 2 of Us
I have an endless appetite for the broken boombox pastoral psych side of Black Moth Super Rainbow. The ugly/fucked up bangers are wonderful, but the really woozy ballads are the tracks that end up on repeat – “All 2 of Us” feels like a musty, hot living room in the afternoon light, but there’s a sexiness that seeps in amidst the tape warble.
Kim Deal – Crystal Breath
Kim Deal’s new solo single is lurching sorta-dance punk, but in a Fall Heads Roll sort of way, not in a Kasabian way. The song struts and dances, despite a lurking unease.

Johnnie Taylor – Can’t Trust Your Neighbor
Stick around til the turnaround on this song, and you’ll be rewarded with an unusual double-verse structure that sounds like two great Al Green songs grafted on top of each other that just happen to share the same refrain. It’s oddly linear for a classic soul song, but Taylor sounds equally great across the entire track. S/O Matt for sending this one!
Seeing The Dare spectacle firsthand in a few weeks; my level of excitement matches my level of skepticism.....
